Having recently fixed a busted MacBook Air I had learned a bit about Recovery Mode (hold Command+R whilst pushing the Power button and release a few seconds after the machine wakes up). I tried that with this machine, and upon hitting “Reinstall MacOS X” was greeted with a prompt telling me it would take -2,148,456,222 days and 8 hours (an uncaught buffer overflow, me thinks). After about 30 seconds, a window pops up saying “Can’t download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X” and the installation gives up. The detailed error log says “Chunk validation failed, retrying” about 1000 times and eventually gives up altogether.

Further investigation suggests this may be something to do with security certificates having expired and hence the machine not being able to download the necessary files from Apple’s servers, but it seems the error can appear for all sorts of reasons. I also tried Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R) but that gave exactly the same error (and would also only have installed OS X Mountain Lion).

I then turned to attempting to make a bootable USB stick of OS X El Capitan from an image downloaded from Apple. I use Linux Mint on my main laptop and that was all I had available. Apple seem to assume everybody has a spare MacBook from which to create a bootable USB so they provide absolutely no documentation to help with this. I also couldn’t find a single guide online that worked from start to finish, so here I summarise what needs to be done.

Steps

As usual, this is all at your own risk 🙂

First you need to go to Apple’s OS Download Page and (step 4) get ahold of “InstallMacOSX.dmg” for El-Capitan. It’s a 6GB file so it might take a ‘lil while. You will also need to find a USB drive with at least 8GB capacity, and make sure it’s blank. The format doesn’t matter, because this procedure will format it correctly.

(In total you will need to use about 15-18GB of disk space by the time you’ve done all the extracting necessary, which shouldn’t be a problem for most computers but it was a challenge for my laptop with it’s 128GB SSD and dual boot Windows/Linux!)

Then you need to get a program called ‘dmg2img’

You can then extract the DMG

Now double click the .img file to mount it. In there is a InstallMaxOSX.pkg file. This requires a utility called “xar” to extract, which can be installed with these instructions (from https://www.oueta.com/linux/extract-pkg-and-mpkg-files-with-xar-on-linux/)

ONE CAVEAT: When I ran this script on my InstallESD.dmg, it crashed because it didn’t recognise the checksum. I think this is because Apple updates the dmg’s anytime there is a security update for El Capitan so the checksum list isn’t updated. All I did was delete the checksum check from the script above. Once I had done this, I ran the script with my USB connected (/dev/sdb for me, but CHECK YOURSELF with fdisk or similar) and after quite a while it finished copying.

I plugged the USB into the MacBook, and opened the startup menu by holding down Option whilst pushing the power button. This gave me the choice of booting from EFI, or choosing a WiFi network. Click on the EFI, and then follow the prompts to install OS X from the USB drive!

For macOS versions up-to Big Sur, you need to use another script “BuildmacOSInstallApp.command” in the main folder to join all the downloads and make the full macOS installer app. All you need is to drag and drop the downloaded macOS folder to the terminal window. The script will build the offline installer and save it to the same folder.

You don’t need to use the second script if your choice is macOS Big Sur. Because, for macOS Big Sur you get a full-size installer from Apple in PKG format. Double-click and open the InstallAssistant.PKG to save the “Install macOS Big Sur.app” to the Applications folder.

Apart from this, some older versions of macOS are available for direct download from Apple (Sierra, EL Capitan, Yosemite) in DMG format.

How to make a macOS bootable USB installer

It is possible to create a backup macOS installer on a DVD or USB drive but later is the best choice. Most of the Macs these days don’t have DVD slots, and the installation through a disc is very slow. Hence we discuss only about making macOS recovery installer on a USB disc. For this you need a Mac and a USB pen drive of at least 8 GB space, and a third-party app called DiskMaker.

First, download a copy of Disk Maker from the official website.

Choose a version as per your requirement. For example, if you want make USB installer for macOS Catalina 10.15, download Disk Maker X 9.

I use an MacBook Pro with High Sierra. Hence, I’m downloading disk maker X 7.

The next step is to download full macOS installer from the App Store to your Applications folder.

Ignore the warning message and proceed to Erase and Create macOS USB disk. Don’t forget to provide your admin password when it prompts.

Keep checking notifications tab for progress. When it completes you will find Install macOS Mojave (or High Sierra) mounted to your desktop as a USB disk.

That’s your backup. Unmount and keep the USB installer to a safe place.

Unfortunately, the above app is not compatible with macOS Big Sur 11 and above. Check the instructions on Apple website, the manual method to make macOS offline USB installer.

What is the alternative if I don’t have usable Mac at the moment?

This method is applicable when you have a Mac, and the internet recovery fails. But think about a situation when your only Mac stops to boot, and you don’t have USB installer or TimeMachine backup! Downloading MacOS DMG file might save you. If you have a macOS DMG, you can create bootable USB disk from a Windows PC — use a software like TransMac for this purpose.

Clean installing or restoring a Mac offline with USB pen drive

As said earlier, you could use the macOS USB installer to do a clean install or restore it upon a boot failure. Just connect the USB disk and press the Option/Alt Key when you hear the boot sound. The Mac will then display all the startup disks available.

Upgraded 2 of my 3 macs on Catalina. No problems. My final machine (iMac) will have to wait as one piece of crucial software (from Hikvision) is still 32-bit and who knows when these clowns will make it 64-bit. i did an upgrade, then a clean-install to see what bugs have been put in. So far, all solid.

The easiest/best way to do this is to use Install Disk Creator.

I encountered a few problems doing a Catalina upgrade: 1) The Catalina post-installation got stuck forever (hot spin), or at least overnight for > 12 hours, at the 'Setting Up Your Mac,' phase on my 2013 MacBook Pro. I DuckDuckGo'd the symptom and found that several other people are having the same exact problem on a variety of Macs. The workaround, which I consider very dangerous, is to do a hard reboot of your Mac. It seems to me that they could do something like a checksum or CRC based comparison/handshake, at least as a first pass, before uploading the entire photo. Anyway, definitely not what I'd called a 'bumpless' upgrade. Not to sound damning, but installation issues always set a bad tone for a product. Apple could have and should have rooted out these problems ahead of time. To them this may sound like a toe stub, but to end users, it is a royal pain in areas far north of their toe.

I'd suggest the instructions say 'name the USB stick USBDrive' from the get-go. After decades in this business, I have lost count of the times that people miss such a basic instruction as 'Make sure to change the element titled 'USBdrive' for the name of the drive you intend to become the bootable installer. Catalina is the buggiest system I ever loaded on a computer. Small but annoying problem; Can't update Apps, can't download Apps, changes Mail.

We’ve been seeing these kinds of comments for over twenty years with each release of a major upgrade to macOS. Someone always declares something to be the worst, buggiest, most stupid update ever. Point being someone is always going to have problems no matter what. So no, Catalina is not the buggiest system ever loaded onto a computer and someone will be along shortly to tell you what their buggiest system ever loaded onto a computer was. The copy-and-paste problem seems to be caused by a font translation issue from the web page to Terminal. The double dashes are coming out as single in Terminal with the error 'command not found'. Replacing the single dashes with doubles results in the error 'invalid option --?' Removing the second set of dashes finally worked for me: .. --volume /Volumes/USBdrive /Applications ..

Create macOS Catalina Bootable USB on Windows: Required Files

macOS Catalina DMG file for a clean installation. (Download links have been provided below)

A good internet connection to download the macOS Catalina DMG file. The file is around 8GBs, so you will need a good internet connection. Alternatively, you can use the Internet Download Manager tool that will help you enhance your downloading speed. I have provided the download links below.

A USB Drive (Pen-Drive or External Disk). Your USB device must be of sufficient memory for the installation.

TransMac tool from Acute Systems. This tool is a Windows application that may replicate and manage folders and files around Apple drives and apparatus, such as Mac-formatted hard drives, flash drives, and other memory devices, also, to open and burn disk images and .dmg along with .sparseimage documents.

How To Create macOS Catalina Bootable USB on Windows: Step by Step

This is a 4 step process, so please make sure you do not skip any part of it and eventually get frustrated with the failure. I have also shared a complete video tutorial on How To Create macOS Catalina Bootable USB on Windows: Step by Step, you can find the video at the end of this post.

Step 1: Download the required files to Create macOS Catalina Bootable USB on Windows

TransMac tool from Acute Systems- This file is password protected and the password is www.techrechard.com. You can extract this file using WinRAR download free and support: WinRAR (win-rar.com).

IDM 6.27 Build 2 Registered (32bit + 64bit Patch) (Techrechard.com) – This file is password protected and the password is www.techrechard.com. You can extract this file using WinRAR download free and support: WinRAR (win-rar.com).

Step 2: Install TransMac Tool on your Windows 10

After downloading the TransMac tool from the above links, you can simply proceed with the installation. You will see the following contents:

After the files have downloaded, click SETUP.

And click, Next.

Accept the terms and conditions.

Choose the directory for installation.

Leave the default ticks and click Next.

And you see that within no time the setup is complete.

Step 3: Open TransMac Tool

Once the installation is over, the transmac tool will open itself. And you will see the following message.

Since we are running the trial version of TransMac, you need to wait for 7 seconds and it will open up automatically. Download k.r.o.s.s 6 led web cam driver free software. After the 7 seconds are over, you can simply click, Run.

Now insert your pendrive, usb drive or any external disk.

And click Tools, followed by Refresh drive list.

Android data recovery. Once you click refresh drive list, you will see your USD device attached.

Step 4: Complete the installation

Now, right click your USB and click Restore with Disk Image.

Now, you will be prompted an error that you need to run TransMac using administrator access. So you simply click YES.

Now, wait again for 7 seconds.

Now, right click on your USB device and click Restore from Disk Image again. You will be prompted with a warning and you can click Yes.

Now you select the Catalins DMG file and upload it.

Now click OK,

Now you will get your last warning that the USD device will be formatted. You can simply click YES.

The restoration process will begin and it will take around 20-30 minutes, depending upon your USD speed. For me, it took around 17 minutes.

Once complete, you will see.

Now the Restore process is complete, and you can use this USB as macOS Catalina Bootable USB. To check the contents of this USB, you will need a MAC system. If you do not have a spare MAC, no need to worry. I will show you the contents of this USB created.

NOTE: This USB will not work on Windows anymore. If you plug it again on your desktop, it will ask you to format the drive. So do not worry. The contents of this USB will be visible only on a MAC system.

As you can see the contents of the USB device. Now, you can use this as a macOS Catalina Bootable USB.

After this process is complete, you can use this USB to install macOS Catalina on your MAC system using the BIOS mode. You simply need to boot your MAC using this USB device at startup.

Install Disk Creator will automatically detect macOS installers on your drive and suggest one for you, displaying its icon along with its path. You can navigate to a different installer if you want, and you can also pick from all the storage devices and volumes currently connected to your Mac through the drop-down menu at the top of the window. Once you're ready to go, click 'Create Installer' and wait. A progress bar across the bottom of the app will tell you how far you have to go, and a pop-up notification will let you know when the process is done. This should only take a few minutes on a USB 3.0 flash drive in a modern Mac, though using USB 2.0 will slow things down.
